Heather and I set off for a morning of tomato picking on a farm near Edisto. The guy who owns the farm also runs Botany Bay Plantation, which is a phenomenal property and a must see if you’re in the area.

We picked a couple of cases of tomatoes and headed out to explore other local vegetable stands. Lunchtime crept in upon us and knowing Po’ Pigs “Bo-B-Q” was nearby we headed there for lunch.

Now, the first thing to know is that there seems to be two Po Pigs’ on Hwy 174 coming into Edisto. The first you will likely pass by on the way to the island because it takes up residence at the end of an old gas station.

Every map I looked at for Po Pigs shows the gas station location. This is not where we stopped. We stopped at the location beside the True Value Hardware store.

I called Po Pigs to find out the story and here is what I learned:

The location you see on the map, in the gas station, was their original location. They have moved to the location where Heather and I stopped. I have the correct location marked in the map below.

Anyway, Heather and I entered and were greeted by a nice cashier who took our order for two buffets.

The dining area has a country or picnic feel to it with some great photography on the walls. They were very old barbecue-themed images.

The photos felt like they were from the 1800s and were a nice addition.

The buffet is relatively short compared to others we have tried, but it is filled with some interesting selections: Brunswick stew, some sort of turkey hash (that’s probably not what it is called), hash and rice, tomato-cucumber-onion salad, and much more.

We filled our plates. I got bbq, coleslaw, hash and rice, rutabagas, and baked beans.  Heather tried of a couple of different things: the Brunswick stew, creamed corn, and the tomato salad.

Po’ Pigs has an assortment of sauces. It was one of the things I found most interesting.

It dawned on me that a visitor to our state could sample the entire state’s variety of BBQ’s in one sitting. Each of the sauces reflected a different region of the state.

There was a midlands mustard sauce, an Orangeburg mustard, an eastern vinegar-pepper, a heavier ketchup-based sauce. Really a nice snapshot of SC BBQ in one place.

The BBQ was good. As typical, I just don’t care for the Dukes mustard sauce, the midlands mustard was better, and the vinegar-pepper was a pretty fair rendition. I don’t remember trying the ketchup sauce.

What was exceptional on the buffet was the tomato salad.

Heather was the first to get it and said I had to try it. I’m glad I did.

There is simply something sublime about this salad when it is done right. And theirs was perfect. We tried to copy it later that week and while ours was tasty, it didn’t touch theirs.

The Brunswick stew, however, was lacking. That is probably because Heather makes the best Brunswick stew I have ever tried. Everyone else’s pales by comparison.

The hash and rice was good, but the creamed corn was the starch of choice. If the tomato salad was the star, the creamed corn was second billing. Just delicious.

We liked Po Pigs and certainly will eat there again next time we are in the area.
